Custer County Search and Rescue (CCSAR) responded Monday and Tuesday (April 30 & May 1) to a mutual aid request from Alamosa Volunteer Search and Rescue (AVSAR) in a search for a missing hiker in the South Zapata Creek area. At dark on Monday ground teams were recalled. The search resumed 630A Tuesday and the hiker was located shortly before 1PM. The hiker (29 year old female) was deceased and the recovery process began. Efforts were aided by 7 county’s SAR teams: Rio Grande SAR, South Chaffee SAR, Conejos SAR, Saguache SAR, Pueblo SAR, Custer SAR, Fremont SAR. A Larimer County member of the SAR Dogs of Colorado also assisted. In addition Flight for Life of Colorado, Division of Fire Prevention and Control’s Multi Mission Aircraft, American Red Cross and the Colorado Search and Rescue Board also assisted the Alamosa team and the Alamosa County Sheriff’s office. The mission was successfully completed at 10PM on Tuesday May 1 and all teams were released from the scene. For additional information contact the Alamosa County Sheriff’s office.
