Custer County Search and Rescue (CCSAR) was activated at 0750 on Monday (7/16/18) to the report of an overdue hiker in the vicinity of Ophir Creek Campground. Over 20 members participated in a hasty search of high probability areas determined based on information gathered from the reporting party. After the likely areas had been covered and containment boundaries established without any definitive results, the team reconvened at the point last seen (PLS) and began a thorough grid search. The subject was found deceased in nearby, moderately steep and wooded terrain. The team completed the recovery process and all members were out of the field by 1715. Our team would like to take the opportunity following this tragedy to remined everyone entering our beautiful backcountry to always consider traveling with a partner and to notify someone of your destination and expected return time; particularly if you choose to travel alone. Also, be aware of how the forecasted weather can impact your travels and be prepared with appropriate attire and equipment. Lastly, do not hesitate to turn around if the situation isn’t ideal.
