On Friday, 7.23.21 at approx. 1315 Custer County SAR was activated to help a party of 2 climbers descending Crestone Needle. After a fall, one climber sustained injuries and was 75′ below the other climber. Neither could safely continue descending from their location without help. With helicopter support from DFPC Canon City Helitack, a team was inserted into the field and successfully reached the stranded climbers at approx. 1800. The subjects and all team members were out of the field by 2015. We extend our thanks to DFPC, Saguache SAR, and CSAR for their assistance during this mission. During this especially wet time of year, we strongly recommend checking weather reports before you head out and carry enough gear/food/water to support yourself should you need rescue support. Unexpected events, including weather, can happen without warning, and when miles into the backcountry, the consequences are much more significant. Be safe out there!
