Yesterday, 9/17/2022 as Custer County SAR Ground Team members were concluding a field training, Saguache County Search & Rescue contacted CCSAR for assistance with a cliffed-out climber on Crestone Needle who went off-route during the descent. A technical team was inserted near Cottonwood Lake by DFPC Canon City Helitack, and they were able to climb to reach the subject as the temperature dropped and gusty winds moved in. The climber was well-prepared – he carried a Garmin InReach, a cell phone with charging bank, food, water, a bright orange bivy that made locating him more clear, a headlamp, many extra batteries, and suitable clothing. We appreciate Alamosa Volunteer Search And Rescue for being on standby to assist our team in the field.
It is crucial when choosing to climb Crestone Needle that route research is thorough and precise. The terrain in this area is complex, exposed, and potentially deadly underscoring the importance of skillful navigation. This is especially true if you are not ascending and descending the same route.
We extend our gratitude to our partners at DFPC Canon City Helitack, REACH Air Medical Services, and Colorado Search and Rescue Association – CSAR for their assistance on this mission. One way to support Search and Rescue efforts across the state is to purchase a CORSAR card at ihelpsearch.org. #staysafeoutthere #KnowBeforeYouGo
