AFA Cadets Recognize Custer SAR for Rescue

A small contingent of Custer County Search & Rescue (CCSAR) volunteers traveled to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs where more than 4,000 cadets at the AFA, an estimated 3,500 were on hand during a mid-day presentation to formally thank and recognize CCSAR members for the May 13th rescue of four Air Force Academy cadets.

For Mission #2 on 7/12/2020, at 1500 CCSAR was alerted to an 80 yr-old subject needing assistance on the Dry Creek Trail approximately 1.25 miles below Dry Lakes. Flight For Life (FFL) and Division of Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC) provided helicopter assistance.

100mph+ winds in November 2011 caused a lot of damage to property in Custer County. They also caused havoc by blowing down hundreds of trees across the access roads and trails that we must use during missions.

At 05:55 on Friday, 23 September, Capt. Pruiksma was notified by the Sheriff’s office of three overdue climbers in the CrestoneNeedle/Peak area.

CCSAR needed an additional ATV, as a backup, to provide for evacuation of either ATV crew in the event of a mechanical breakdown or other event that would render the ATV immobile and distant from help.
