Custer County Search and Rescue received a call at 18:34 on August 5th that a mushroom hunter had disappeared from his group four hours earlier. It was reported that the subject had no food, no water, no rain gear and was wearing shorts and sandals. CCSAR responded with twelve searchers, 6 members of the ATV team and two support members at base for a total of 20 members. The teams were dispatched to the Greenhorn Mountain area to begin the search. At approximately 22:00 the Sheriff’s Office was notified that the subject showed up at a residential home 11 miles from the point last seen. All teams were back in Westcliffe by 23:30.
